In 2019, a bust of Jógvan Waagstein was unveiled in Klaksvík, paying tribute to one of the Faroe Islands’ most influential cultural figures. The ceremony was organized by Norðoya Sparikassi in cooperation with Klaksvík Municipality.
Born in Klaksvík, Jógvan Waagstein was a multi-talented artist and educator. Alongside his lifelong work as a teacher, he contributed widely to Faroese cultural life — as a composer, music transcriber, organist, and painter. He served as the organist at Tórshavn Cathedral and composed several beloved songs, including “Í búri”, “Tíðin rennur sum streymur í á”, and “Ein skortlitt kúgv við garðalið.”
As a visual artist, Waagstein focused primarily on the Faroese landscape and village life. He also painted altarpieces for churches in Árnafjørður, Mikladalur, and Hov.
The bust stands as a lasting tribute to Waagstein’s legacy, celebrating his deep connection to Faroese nature, music, and tradition.
