The church of Hvannasund

In 1933, H.C.W. Tórgarð, an architect from Tórshavn, was asked to design blueprints and cost estimates for a new church in Hvannasund. However, the process turned out to be lengthy, and construction did not begin until 1948.

The design remained the same—a church with concrete walls, clad with wooden interior paneling, and a corrugated iron roof (which was later replaced with asbestos during construction). The church measured 22 alen (about 13.8 meters) in length and 12 alen (about 7.5 meters) in width, with windows on both sides. It was planned to have 100 fixed seats in the nave, along with additional seating in the choir and gallery. The design was inspired by the church in Kirkja.

However, finding someone to undertake the construction proved difficult. The job was advertised in newspapers, but no bids were received. Eventually, the locals of Sund decided to build the church themselves. The concrete work was led by Niels í Buð, while Meinhard Poulsen, a master builder, and Jóaness Christiansen, a carpenter from Kirkja, managed the woodwork.

On November 12, 1949, the church in Hvannasund was inspected and approved by Martin Sivertsen (Hvannasund) and Gunnar Krúnufjall (Norðtoftir).
