In the northernmost village of the Faroe Islands, surrounded by breathtaking mountains and ocean views, you’ll find Leitisgarður – a charming, family-run farm where tradition, nature, and hospitality come together.
At Leitisgarður, you’ll meet friendly sheep, curious ducks, geese, hens – and the farm’s most charismatic resident, Virgar the turkey. This is not just a farm – it’s a warm and welcoming home where animals and guests are equally cherished.
The nature surrounding Leitisgarður is simply stunning. Whether you’re hiking in the mountains, enjoying the calm of the open landscape, or watching one of the most beautiful sunsets in the Faroes, this place invites you to slow down and connect with nature.
The farm has been in Esmar’s family since the 1500s. A true man of the land, his life has always revolved around the mountains – tending to sheep and hunting seabirds. Esmar also worked for many years as a guide to Enniberg, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, and knows every path and peak around Viðareiði.
What started as a small, spontaneous project has grown into a lively bird garden filled with unique and fun-loving birds. Together, Irena and Esmar have created a beautiful space that is now home to various species of ducks, geese, and other birds.
The bird garden has become a favorite spot for families, tourists, kindergartens, and schools. A cozy new café is also in the works – a place where visitors can relax, enjoy the view, and connect with farm life.
At Leitisgarður, life follows the rhythm of the seasons. Esmar and his family divide their time between traditional sheep farming, tending to the garden, and developing new tourism projects. What truly makes the farm special is the sense of community and love for the land that runs through everything they do.
For Irena and Esmar, sharing their way of life is not just a passion – it’s a way to invite others into the peace and beauty of Viðareiði. Follow them on Instagram to see daily life on the farm and get in touch if you’d like to visit.
