The church of Húsar

On April 23, 1916, the municipal council for Kunoy, Mikladalur, and Húsar parishes sent a letter to the Faroese County and the Provost, requesting a design for a new stone church with an iron roof in Húsar. This was to replace the old church, which had been destroyed by strong winds during the winter.

On July 19, 1916, the churchwarden, Daniel Hansen, received permission from the authorities to dismantle the ruined church when he deemed it appropriate. He was instructed to store the usable materials in a safe place and, after an assessment by two reliable men, to sell any unusable materials that could not be incorporated into the new church.

Later, the Faroese Parliament (Løgting) assigned the County Governor and the Provost to obtain a design and cost estimate for a new stone church measuring 12 × 24 alen (approximately 7.5 × 15 meters). They approached Guttorm Eysturoy, a master carpenter from Tórshavn, who had trained in Bergen, Norway, and based the church’s design on Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim.

The foundation was prepared, but the site remained undeveloped for about a year while the men of Húsar and Syðradalur quarried and shaped the stone.

Christian J. Sørensen oversaw the construction, personally handling the stone and masonry work, while Guttorm Eysturoy was responsible for the woodwork and carpentry.

The five spires of the church were reportedly made in Askham’s smithy in Tórshavn. The main spire bears the year 1919, as that was when the church was originally planned to be completed.

It has been said that Húsar Church was so expensive that it emptied not only the church fund of Norðoyar Parish but also all other church funds in the Faroe Islands—and more.

For four years (1916–1920), the village of Húsar had no church. Finally, on July 11, 1920 (the 6th Sunday after Trinity), Provost Jákup Dahl consecrated the new church.
