The church of Mikladalur

On July 6, 1855, a church inspection was conducted in Mikladalur. The inspectors declared that the church was in such poor condition that it could not be repaired and was also too small for the congregation. They recommended that the church be dismantled and replaced with a new one. According to the church inspection report dated June 12, 1860, a new church was built in 1859.

From the turn of the century until 1915, the church deteriorated significantly. Several church inspections during this period noted its poor condition, and the residents of Mikladalur Parish also voiced their concerns. On May 26, 1909, they wrote to the Faroese County (Færø Amt), explaining the dire state of the church.

After lengthy correspondence between the church council, the provost, and the county authorities, particularly regarding funding, a major renovation project was finally approved.

In 1915, renovations began. The current church is therefore only partially new, as the original walls were kept. However, the walls and gables were significantly raised, the roof was replaced with iron sheets instead of the old slate roof, and the interior was clad with wood, while the exterior was plastered. Previously, there had been no windows on the northern side, but the renovation introduced four large windows and one smaller window on each side. The tower was constructed from timber, clad with iron, and topped with an iron spire featuring a weather vane.

On December 15, 1915, Provost Fr. Petersen consecrated the newly renovated church. Among those present were local residents, former Norðoyar priest Absalon Joensen, the County Governor, and the commander of the Danish naval vessel “Beskytteren,” which had transported the provost and governor to the ceremony.
