The church of Viðareiði

On November 20, 1892, the newly built church in Viðareiði was inspected and approved by J. Heinesen and S. Fr. Jacobsen.

Later that same day, the church was consecrated by J. C. Evensen, the dean. In the fine weather, many locals had gathered and solemnly walked in procession from the old church (built in 1831) to the new one, together with guests from the Northern Islands. They carried with them altar items and other church artifacts.

A brief description from 1891 states that the church was a stone-built structure, 28 alen (about 17.5 meters) long and 12 alen (about 7.5 meters) wide, with a slate roof and iron-framed windows. The cost of construction was estimated at 9,000 kroner, with Jóhan Andr. Petersen, a parliament member from Mikladalur, taking on the main construction work for 8,000 kroner. Additional minor works were required, but the estimated cost held true.

In Viðareiði Church, there is an artifact considered one of the oldest church relics in the Faroe Islands—a crucifix from 1551, hanging on the north wall of the church. It was donated by Thomas Koppen from Hamburg, who obtained exclusive trading rights in the Faroe Islands in 1533.

Since the church was built, extensive maintenance and modifications have taken place. Among other things, the roof has been replaced four times, and the cast-iron windows have been replaced with wooden ones.
