Varðin undir Fossum – A Modern Cairn Guiding the Way Forward

In Klaksvík, a unique roundabout monument known as “Varðin undir Fossum” (The Cairn at Fossum) serves both as a symbolic guidepost and a celebration of Faroese tradition and craftsmanship. Built in 2008, the three-meter-high cairn marks the entrance to a new residential area and a newly constructed road that eases traffic flow in and out of the town.

Designed and constructed by local craftsman Heðin Ferjá Heldarskarð, together with skilled stoneworkers from Klaksvík and Tórshavn, the cairn is built from local stone – much of it reclaimed from old buildings in the nearby area of Gerðir. This reuse of historic materials gives the sculpture symbolic value, blending the old with the new.

Inspired by the traditional Faroese wayfinding cairns, which for centuries helped travelers navigate mountain paths, this modern version points in all four cardinal directions using metal arms, each fitted with blue lights. The blue light represents life and renewal, symbolizing the growth and energy of the town’s expanding community.

At the top of the structure is a metal ring, representing unity and eternity—similar to a wedding ring—reflecting the connection between the old and new parts of Klaksvík.

“Varðin” is more than just a decorative feature. It’s a cultural landmark, rooted in Faroese identity and built with pride, craftsmanship, and a vision for the town’s future.
