Fishing Faroe Islands – coastal angling

Fishing Faroe Islands | Saltwater & Freshwater

Saltwater Fishing in the Faroe Islands

Fishing is deeply woven into Faroese culture — it is how life here began and continues to thrive. Whether you cast a line from the shore or head out by boat, you are never more than 5 km from the ocean. With rich fishing grounds and dramatic coastal scenery, saltwater fishing in the Faroe Islands is both accessible and highly rewarding.

For many Faroese children, fishing starts at the harbour, catching flounder with a simple rod — a cherished tradition that reflects the islands’ strong connection to the sea. Today, both deep-sea fishing and fly fishing are popular, and the sheltered waters make fishing possible on most days of the year.

Practical Information

Before arriving in the Faroe Islands, all fishing equipment — including rods, reels, rubber waders, and lures — must be cleaned and disinfected to prevent the spread of fish diseases. A veterinary certificate is not required, but proper disinfection is mandatory.

Coastal fishing is generally permitted, though local restrictions may apply. Any fish you catch must be consumed in the Faroe Islands. For a sustainable experience, catch only what you intend to eat and release unwanted fish carefully back into the sea.

Fishing Tip

Always check the local weather forecast before heading out — conditions can change quickly and affect both safety and fishing spots.

Typical Saltwater Catches

Cod, haddock, flounder, ling, coalfish, halibut, plaice, catfish, mackerel, monkfish, whiting, squid, redfish, herring, pollock and more.

Boat Rentals with Fishing Gear

Explore the Faroese fjords aboard a traditional boat from Boat.fo. Suitable for 2–6 people, these boats come fully equipped with fishing gear and safety equipment, making them ideal for a relaxed day at sea — whether you’re fishing or simply enjoying the views with friends or family.

Freshwater Angling in the Faroe Islands

While best known for their rich marine life, the Faroe Islands also offer excellent freshwater angling in pristine lakes and streams scattered across the landscape. Surrounded by mountains and waterfalls, these remote locations provide peaceful fishing experiences and unforgettable scenery.

Anglers can expect to catch brown trout and Arctic char, particularly in colder and deeper lakes. For many Faroese, fishing in local lakes is a cherished childhood tradition and a quiet way to connect with nature.

Practical Information

A fishing permit is required for freshwater angling and can be purchased locally. Some waters are privately owned, so always check access rules before fishing.

All equipment — rods, reels, rubber waders, and lures — must be cleaned and disinfected before arrival. No veterinary certificate is required.

For sustainability, anglers should catch only what they intend to eat. Fish must be consumed locally and may not be taken out of the country. For sport fishing, catch and release is recommended to help protect fragile freshwater ecosystems.

Fishing Tip

Weather conditions change rapidly in the Faroes. Always check the forecast, dress appropriately, and wear sturdy footwear — some fishing spots require a short hike.

Typical Freshwater Catches

  • Brown trout – common in many lakes and rivers
  • Arctic char – found in colder, deeper lakes

Disinfection of Fishing Gear

The greatest risk of transmitting fish diseases such as IHN comes from fishing equipment transported between countries, including rods, reels, rubber boots, and waders. To protect Faroese fish populations, all equipment must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before arrival.

A veterinary certificate is no longer required.

Approved Disinfection Methods

Choose one of the following methods:

  • Rinse in tap water and keep at a minimum temperature of 20°C for at least two days after drying
  • Rinse in tap water, then heat-dry for at least one hour above 60°C
  • Rinse in tap water, then immerse in a disinfecting solution for at least 10 minutes
(approved agents include Virkon S or Halamid)

When fishing in the Faroe Islands, take care to prevent the spread of diseases between saltwater and freshwater environments.
