Gamla Seglhúsið Klaksvik is a beautifully restored historic building with a rich past. Originally built in 1914 as a warehouse, it was quickly rented out and became widely known as the old sailhouse. Over time, it has played many roles in Klaksvík’s cultural life, and today, as a result, it stands as a perfect blend of historical architecture and contemporary creativity.
In 2005, Símun and Jastrid Gullaksen purchased the building, and in 2011, restoration began. The project was initiated by Símun and two close friends. Moreover, they received invaluable help from skilled craftsmen throughout the process. Later, a carpenter and a joiner joined to complete the finer details. As a result, the building retains its authentic character while offering functional spaces for modern use.
Spanning three floors and covering around 230 m², the house includes two smaller extensions. The loft is home to Sp/f Grafia, Jastrid’s graphic design studio. Meanwhile, the remaining spaces are used for art, events and exhibitions.
Gamla Seglhúsið hosts monthly exhibitions (listaframsýningar) that are free to visit, featuring both well-known and emerging artists. Exhibitions are open Monday–Friday 14:00–17:00 and on Sundays and public holidays 15:00–18:00.
