Hvannasund

Hvannasund is a small village with deep historical roots. It appears in the first Faroese land register from 1584. The village covers 16 merkur of copyhold land, which four tenants share. Sheep farming remains part of local life, with around 380 sheep on the island.

Since 1974, a causeway has connected Hvannasund with Norðdepil on Borðoy. As a result, the area has developed into a shared community. Together with nearby villages such as Depil, Múli, and Norðtoftir, Hvannasund forms part of Hvannasunds Kommuna.

The causeway also made it possible to build a modern harbour. Today, port facilities on both sides support fishing and related industries. For example, companies like Bakkafrost operate in the area. This has played an important role in local economic growth.

In the past, Hvannasund and Norðdepil each had their own school. However, this changed with the opening of Skúlin á Fossanesi in 1983. The school later expanded in 2009. It now serves as a community school for the entire municipality, offering classes from 1st to 7th grade.

After 7th grade, students continue their education in Klaksvík. The school also provides after-school care. In addition, the village has an integrated day-care facility, which supports families in the area.

Hvannasund has seen steady population growth over the years. In 1966, the village had 138 inhabitants. By 2024, the number had increased to 264 residents. This growth reflects the village’s development and strong local community.
