This hike on the remote island of Fugloy is unlike most other hiking routes in the Faroe Islands. The journey allows you to experience two isolated villages—arriving by boat to one and leaving from the other.
Typically, hikers sail to either Hattarvík or Kirkja, walk across the island between the two villages, and then return by boat from the other village.
The hike is only possible when the boat service is operating and weather conditions allow sailing. Before planning your trip, make sure to confirm the boat schedule.
You can contact the SSL (Strandfaraskip Landsins) overseer in Fugloy at:

They can inform you about the sailing times and conditions for that specific day.
Starting in Hattarvík, the path is easy to locate. Walk south along the road and pass through the gate. From there, continue uphill toward the stone gate.
The trail leads past the areas known as Dirhamar, Gullheygg, and Kirkjuheygg, before continuing upward toward Kross, where the route crosses the mountain ridge.
The path itself is not heavily used and can therefore be difficult to see in places. However, cairns mark the way, making it relatively easy to follow the correct direction.
After crossing the ridge near Kross, the trail begins to descend toward Kirkja. Follow the route beneath the line of electricity poles as you make your way down toward the village.
Both Hattarvík and Kirkja are fascinating places to explore. Their remote location and traditional houses offer a glimpse into life in one of the most isolated parts of the Faroe Islands.
Once you arrive in Kirkja, take time to walk through the small village.
You can visit the church and continue down to the old landing place called Niðri á Gjógv, where boats once arrived and departed from the island.
From here, you can catch the boat back and complete this truly unique island adventure.
