Kirkja

Kirkja is a small and remote village on the island of Fugloy. Today, around 30 people live here. The village covers 20 merkur of land, most of which is freehold. Sheep farming remains part of daily life, with around 410 sheep grazing in the area.

Kirkja has a long religious history. A church has stood in the village since at least 1592, which is also reflected in its name.

In 1833, the old church fell into disrepair. However, after a tragic boat accident in 1818, where many local men lost their lives, the community did not have the resources to build a new one. As a result, Hattarvík became the main church village for many years.

In 1933, the village built a new church. Local engineer and politician Louis Zachariassen designed it. The altarpiece was painted by the well-known Faroese artist S. Joensen-Mikines.

Kirkja opened its first school in 1866. Today, the school serves the entire island of Fugloy. In recent years, only a few pupils have attended, reflecting the small population.

Kirkja offers a peaceful and authentic experience of Faroese village life. Surrounded by dramatic nature and far from busy towns, it is a place where traditions and everyday life remain closely connected.
