Esmar Sørensen

Farmer

Meet the locals in the Northern Faroe Islands and get to know Esmar, a farmer from the remote village of Viðareiði, where tradition, nature, and family life are deeply connected. Esmar runs the family farm, which has been passed down through generations since the 16th century. He has spent his entire life in the mountains, tending sheep and harvesting seabirds. Over the years, he has come to know the landscape in great detail. For many seasons, he has also worked as a guide, leading visitors to Enniberg, one of the most dramatic sea cliffs in the Faroe Islands. In recent years, Esmar and his wife have created something quite unique next to their farm. What started as a small and spontaneous idea with just a few ducks has gradually grown into a charming and creative duck farm. Today, the farm is home to several different species of ducks and geese. As a result, it has become a popular place for families, school groups, kindergartens, and visitors who want to experience rural life up close. Life as a farmer follows the rhythm of the seasons. Sheep farming and daily tasks change throughout the year. With help from his family, Esmar also finds time to work on new tourism projects. One of the latest ideas is a cosy café, which they are currently building next to the duck farm. The café will give visitors a place to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Esmar feels deeply connected to his home in Viðareiði. Here, he has everything he needs. The combination of open landscapes, long summer days, and the quiet presence of nature creates a strong sense of belonging. For him, it is not only the scenery that matters, but also the farm, the animals, and above all, family life, which together shape everyday life in the village.
