Paulina M. K. Eliasen

Paulina M. K. Eliasen

Embroidery Artist

Meet the locals in the Northern Faroe Islands and get to know Paulina, an embroidery artist whose work keeps traditional Faroese craftsmanship alive. Paulina trained as a textile and handicraft teacher, and she has dedicated much of her life to embroidery. In addition to teaching, she has also published five books on the subject, sharing her knowledge and passion with others. Originally from Kollafjørður, Paulina has lived in Syðradalur for the past 40 years. Over time, she has built a life closely connected to both her craft and the small island community. For the past 25 years, she has organised summer courses in embroidery, where women from across the Faroe Islands gather to learn, create, and share experiences. Each year, several courses take place, and around 60 participants join the summer school. These gatherings have become an important meeting point for those interested in traditional handicrafts. Life on a small island like Syðradalur changes with the seasons. During summer, the island fills with visitors and activity. In contrast, winter brings a much quieter atmosphere. Paulina believes that enjoying both seasons is essential to thriving in such a place. Having a hobby or creative outlet becomes especially valuable during the calm winter months. For Paulina, embroidery is more than just a skill. It is a way to express creativity and stay connected to tradition. She feels fortunate to work full-time with something she truly enjoys. Creating something with your own hands, she says, brings a deep sense of satisfaction. Living in Syðradalur allows her to combine her passion for craftsmanship with a peaceful way of life surrounded by nature.
