Maður við línustampi

In Klaksvík, the statue Maður við línustampi (“Man with a Line Tub”) pays tribute to the longline fishing tradition that has shaped the town for generations. For decades, longline fishing formed a vital part of both the local economy and the identity of the Northern Isles. Therefore, the sculpture stands as a powerful symbol of this enduring way of life.

The statue portrays a fisherman holding a line tub — an essential tool in traditional longline fishing. Fishermen carefully prepared and stored their baited lines in these tubs before heading out to sea. As a result, the line tub became a familiar and important part of daily harbour life.

Created to Mark Fishermen’s Day

The town installed the statue in connection with the very first Fishermen’s Day celebration in Klaksvík. Organisers wanted a permanent symbol that honoured the men who built the community through hard work at sea. In 2005, the town officially unveiled the sculpture.

Renowned Faroese artist Archibald Black developed the artistic concept. Craftsman Ólavur Samson carried out the construction. Together, they created a monument that combines strong symbolism with solid craftsmanship.

The statue is made of iron, a material that reflects durability and resilience. In this way, the material itself reinforces the message behind the work.

A Meaningful Location

The sculpture stands at Stongunum, near the entrance to the harbour area. Many of Klaksvík’s fishing boats lie moored nearby. In addition, longline operations still take place on land in this very area.

The town carefully chose this location. The statue remains visible to fishermen, harbour workers, and visitors alike. Consequently, it serves not only as a memorial but also as a living reminder of ongoing maritime activity.

A Symbol of Connection

Ultimately, Maður við línustampi represents more than one fisherman. It symbolises the close relationship between sea and land. It honours the generations who rose early, prepared their lines, and faced the open ocean.

Today, the statue stands as a proud reminder of Klaksvík’s maritime heritage — and of the people whose labour and determination helped shape the town into what it is today.
