Memorial in Syðradalur, Kalsoy

Just north of the village of Syðradalur on Kalsoy, a memorial stands in quiet reflection. The community established it in 2000 to honour residents with ties to the village who lost their lives in accidents — at sea or on land.

The monument recognises the risks that have shaped life in the Faroe Islands for generations. Both the ocean and the rugged landscape have provided livelihood and challenge. Therefore, the memorial serves as a reminder of the courage and sacrifice connected to everyday life in small island communities.

A Community Effort

Erik Eliasen donated the land where the memorial now stands. A local committee then planned and carried out the project. The committee included Jens Jacobsen, Ásbjørn Lómaklett, Solveig Hansen, Erik Eliasen, and Paulina Eliasen.

Through their dedication and cooperation, the group brought the idea to life. They completed and fully funded the memorial by 8 July 2000. As a result, the village gained a lasting place for remembrance and reflection.

Funding and Maintenance

The Andreas Eliasen Memorial Fund financed the project. Today, Klaksvík Municipality maintains the site and ensures that it remains cared for and respected.

A Place of Reflection

Visitors who stop at the memorial encounter a peaceful setting overlooking the surrounding landscape. The location itself adds meaning. It connects memory with the land and sea that shaped the lives of those remembered.

Ultimately, the Syðradalur Memorial stands as a symbol of community, remembrance, and respect — honouring those who were lost and ensuring that their stories remain part of the village’s shared history.
