Norðdepil

Norðdepil is a small village on the island of Borðoy. As of December 2024, it has 158 inhabitants. The village has its own cemetery, but no church. Despite its size, Norðdepil plays an important role in the local community.

Since 1974, a causeway has linked Norðdepil with Hvannasund. As a result, the two villages form a close and connected community. They share facilities, services, and everyday life.

This connection makes it easier for residents to access schools, shops, and workplaces. It also strengthens the social ties between the two villages. Together, they function as a small but active local centre in the northern part of Borðoy.

Norðdepil has a history shaped by both fishing and industry. In 1897, a Norwegian whaling station was established in the village. It operated until shortly after 1912.

During this time, the whaling station created jobs and activity in the area. Although the station no longer exists, it remains an important part of the village’s history.

Today, Norðdepil offers a calm and authentic village environment. The surrounding landscape includes mountains, sea, and open land. As a result, nature plays a central role in daily life.

Residents enjoy a peaceful setting while still being close to modern facilities. The connection to Hvannasund makes everyday life more practical and accessible.

Norðdepil combines history, community, and natural beauty. It offers visitors a glimpse into everyday life in the Faroe Islands.

Overall, Norðdepil is a small but meaningful part of Borðoy. Its location, history, and strong community make it a unique place to experience.
