Please note that Christianskirkjan will remain closed to visitors throughout 2026 due to roof replacement works. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
Christianskirkjan, the Lutheran church in Klaksvík, opened on 7 July 1963. The church honours Faroese sailors who lost their lives during the Second World War.
Architects designed the church with inspiration from Viking halls and traditional Faroese homes. As a result, the building has a distinctive structure that stands out among Nordic churches. The roof design supports both the architecture and the interior space.
The church is also known for its excellent acoustics. In fact, many consider it one of the best-sounding churches of its size in the Faroe Islands.
The altarpiece has a long and remarkable history. It originally hung in Viborg Cathedral in Denmark. Later, the Danish National Gallery preserved it. Eventually, it found its permanent home in Christianskirkjan.
In 2012, experts from around the world restored the altarpiece. At the same time, they refurbished other parts of the church. The team completed the work in time for the church’s 50th anniversary in 2013.
To celebrate this milestone, artist Edward Fuglø and artisan Sjúrður Sólstein created a new artwork. They titled it “Jesus from Nazareth.” The piece includes ten panels that show scenes from the life of Jesus.
You can attend church services at Christianskirkjan every Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
