Christianskirkjan

Please note: Due to roof replacement works, Christianskirkjan will be closed to visitors throughout 2026. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Christianskirkjan, the Lutheran church in Klaksvík, was consecrated on 7 July 1963. The church is dedicated to the memory of Faroese sailors who lost their lives during the Second World War.

It was the first large church in the Nordic countries to be designed with inspiration from old Viking halls and the traditional common hall found in historic Faroese homes. The distinctive roof structure is particularly well suited for church architecture, and Christianskirkjan is renowned for its exceptional acoustics — considered among the best of Faroese churches of similar size.

The altarpiece originally hung in Viborg Cathedral in Denmark. It was later transferred to the Danish National Gallery before finally being installed in Christianskirkjan in Klaksvík, where it remains today.

In 2012, the altarpiece underwent a major restoration carried out by conservators from around the world. During this period, other parts of the church were also refurbished. The restoration was completed in time for the church’s 50th anniversary in 2013, which was celebrated with a grand ceremony.

To mark the anniversary, artist Edward Fuglø and artisan Sjúrður Sólstein created an impressive artwork for the church titled “Jesus from Nazareth.” The piece consists of ten panels, each depicting scenes from the life of Jesus.

Church services are held on Sundays at 11:00 a.m.
