Located in Klaksvík, Spinnaríið (The House of Faroese Wool) is a unique cultural attraction. Here, visitors discover the rich heritage of Faroese wool processing. The building once housed a working spinning mill. Today, the non-profit organisation Áhugafelagið Spinnaríið has transformed it into a living museum and creative workshop.
For centuries, wool has played an important role in Faroese life. Sheep graze freely across the islands, and people have used their wool to make warm clothing and everyday essentials. The North Atlantic climate made wool an essential resource. Today, Spinnaríið keeps these traditions alive. The organisation also promotes sustainable craftsmanship and modern uses for Faroese wool.
Inside, visitors explore historic wool-processing machines and interactive displays. The exhibition shows how craftspeople turn raw fleece into usable wool. Visitors learn how people wash, card, spin, and prepare fibres for knitting or weaving. Friendly volunteers often demonstrate traditional techniques and happily answer questions.
Spinnaríið also tells the story of Klaksvík’s two historic wool companies. Klaksvíkar Ullvirki, founded by J.F. Kjølbro, helped build the local wool industry. Norðoya Ullvirki, later run by Mona Olsen, continued that tradition. Historic photographs, original machinery, and exhibitions show how these companies shaped both Klaksvík and the Faroe Islands.
Spinnaríið offers much more than a museum experience. Visitors can try traditional wool-working tools and learn simple spinning and carding techniques. Throughout the year, the organisation hosts workshops, demonstrations, and cultural events. These activities help preserve Faroese wool traditions and inspire future generations.
A cosy café corner invites guests to relax with coffee, cakes, and cold drinks. Visitors can also use the free Wi-Fi while enjoying the welcoming atmosphere. The small shop sells Faroese wool that the team washes and cards at Spinnaríið. You will also find handmade wool products and locally made souvenirs. Every purchase supports local craftsmanship and helps preserve Faroese wool traditions.

The entrance fee includes access to the exhibitions, workshop area, café facilities, and Wi-Fi. Visitors can also learn about Faroese wool traditions and the history of the historic spinning mill.
