Statue in Klaksvík Roundabout

In 2007, Klaksvík unveiled a distinctive sculpture in one of its central roundabouts. Local artist and metalworker Heðin Ferjá Heldarskarð, only 28 years old at the time, designed and created the installation.

The artwork immediately became a recognizable landmark in the town.

Four Pillars – Four Neighborhoods

The sculpture consists of four large stone pillars. Each pillar points toward one of the four cardinal directions. At the same time, each one represents one of Klaksvík’s four traditional neighbourhoods: Vági, Myrkjanoyri, Gerðar, and Uppsalar.

Importantly, the artist sourced the stones locally from each respective area. Therefore, the pillars do more than indicate direction — they physically connect the sculpture to the land itself. In this way, geography and identity merge into one unified expression.

A Compass and a Boat

At the centre of the installation, a stainless steel structure binds the four stones together. The design resembles a compass, reinforcing the idea of orientation and direction. However, when viewed from different angles, the central form also resembles a traditional Faroese rowing boat.

This dual symbolism is intentional. The compass represents guidance and unity, while the boat reflects Klaksvík’s deep maritime heritage. For generations, the sea has shaped the town’s economy, culture, and daily life. Consequently, the sculpture connects land and ocean in one cohesive visual statement.

A Modern Landmark

Today, the sculpture stands as a powerful symbol of both division and unity. While the four neighbourhoods maintain their historical identities, they form one town. The stainless steel centre quite literally holds them together.

As a result, the artwork beautifully ties together Klaksvík’s landscape, history, and seafaring traditions. It welcomes visitors at the heart of the town and reminds locals of their shared roots.

Ultimately, the sculpture reflects direction, connection, and community — values that continue to guide Klaksvík forward.
