Varðin undir Fossum

A Modern Cairn with Deep Roots

In Klaksvík, the roundabout monument Varðin undir Fossum (“The Cairn at Fossum”) stands as both a symbolic guidepost and a celebration of Faroese tradition. Built in 2008, the three-metre-high cairn marks the entrance to a new residential area. At the same time, it highlights the newly constructed road that improves traffic flow in and out of town.

Built from Local Stone

Local craftsman Heðin Ferjá Heldarskarð designed and constructed the monument. Skilled stoneworkers from Klaksvík and Tórshavn assisted in the work.

The team built the cairn using local stone. Importantly, much of the material came from reclaimed buildings in the nearby area of Gerðir. This reuse of historic stone gives the monument deeper meaning. It physically connects Klaksvík’s past with its present growth.

Inspired by Faroese Wayfinding

Traditional Faroese cairns once guided travellers across mountain paths. These stone markers helped people find their way through fog, snow, and rough terrain. Varðin undir Fossum draws inspiration from this heritage.

However, this modern cairn adds a contemporary element. Metal arms extend in all four cardinal directions. Each arm features blue lighting. The blue glow symbolises life, renewal, and forward movement. It reflects the energy of Klaksvík’s expanding community.

A Symbol of Unity

At the top of the structure sits a metal ring. The ring represents unity and eternity, much like a wedding band. Through this symbol, the monument expresses connection — between neighbourhoods, generations, and old and new parts of the town.

More Than a Roundabout Feature

Although the cairn stands in a roundabout, it is far more than decoration. It represents identity, craftsmanship, and vision. By combining traditional materials with modern design, Varðin undir Fossum embodies Klaksvík’s respect for heritage and its confidence in the future.

Today, the monument welcomes residents and visitors alike — guiding them forward while firmly rooted in history.
